Little Rann of Kutch

Safaris

Safaris in the LRK

The LRK is supposedly empty and a desolate landscape, but it reveals itself to those in the know. Many animals, birds, reptiles and vegetation occupy it. Driving into the wide-open flatland is an experience that makes you feel like you are in an altogether different world. Yet in the hands of our skilled drivers and LRK specialists, they will steer you to the places where you can encounter the Asiatic Wild Ass, Desert Foxes and other animals and birds of the Little Rann. Our drivers are experts in deciphering any movement or traces of animal presence.

There are several ways in which you can undertake the safari, and you can also choose the destinations and experiences you seek. During the safari, you explore the salt flats, understand the biodiversity in this desolate landscape, and come to terms with its geology and spectacular vistas.

Wonders Through Every Season

  • For Bird lovers, winter is ideal for viewing and getting close to migratory birds.
  • With the onset of the summer, the focus of the safari sifts to discovering the denning Foxes and the Hyenas.
  • The onset of monsoon season sees the arrival of the Flamingos, and most safaris focus on delivering the experience of watching the large flocks of these nesting beauties.
  • Another long drive would be the trip across the Rann via Nando Bet - the northernmost island of the Little Rann - to Khadir Bet, the oversized island in the Rann. Here, you could visit Dholavira - the ancient Harappan town's ruins that showcase the achievements of ancient Indian civilisation. The old city is famous for its sanitation and water engineering - i.e. fresh water harvesting systems that hark back to 3000+ years.
  • Our intrepid guides are also well-versed in the topography and landscapes outside the Little Rann, and you can join them on an exploratory trip into Nawa Talao, Wadkoa, Saw-lash Lake, Mandav Talao, and Pancheshwar Kiari. These landscapes present us with areas that are a mix of wetlands, grasslands, lakes and canal systems. These are ideal breeding grounds for species such as the Lesser Florican, Painted Storks, and several species of Ducks and Waterfowl.
